The eyelids play a key role in protecting the eyes. They sweep away debris when the eyes close and help spread moisture (tears) over the surface of the eyes when they open. The eyelids provide a mechanical barrier against injury by closing rapidly when needed.
To function properly, the lids must be able to close completely and open enough as not to block the pupillary area. In other words, the eyelids is an automatic barrier that protect the eyes against the external environment. They prevent dessication of the cornea and conjunctiva when sleeping.
The blinking reflex protects the ocular surface from airborne organisms, foreign bodies and minor traumas. On seeing the approach of a foreign body, the eye lashes initiates the blinking reflex which protects the eye.
Care of the eyelids
1. Moisturize, Moisturize and Moisturize. To prevent dehydration, dryness and wrinkles because the skin around the eyes is very delicate.
Olive oil, petroleum jelly are good for your eyelids.
2. Remove make-up at the end of the day. Never go to bed wearing makeup. It can clog the pores of the eyelids and that may cause stye.
3.Get enough sleep. Irregular sleep may contribute to eye fatigue.
4. Cultivate the habit of placing cold cucumber slices on the eyelids for 10-15 minutes before going to sleep. This helps to prevent eye puffiness.
